Some distros do not obey this convention:
on debian:
cat /etc/debian_version

I think the best way on most linux distros:
lsb_release -a

Is there also a way to check what OS is on other partitions from within the terminal? I’m having several linux distro’s installed and am always confused which sda1-12 is which install 😛

i have no experience on that before but i think each installed linux should have its own /etc folder. so the cat command should help.
